Getting on for 40 jars of Marmalade, whittled down to a final 5…and then a winner!!
We’re enormously grateful to everyone for entering their marmalade into this years competition. Regrettably of course there can only be one winner, but before we announce this, it’d be good to tell you how we judge.
We have a group of marmalade lovers made up of Uğur Vata from The Galley, Harvey Allen from Honey+Harvey and Kirsteen, Kya and Paul from WKC, and since we’re judging during shop hours, passing customers take an interest and throw in their two pennies’ worth too.
Our main judging criteria are: taste, set, clarity and getting the right bite or peel softness. Throw in different judges’ taste buds: some like thin cut and some thick, and you can see that judging is something of a task !!
This year we took in nearly 40 entries and whittled down over 3 hours to a final 5 entires . It is incredibly difficult to separate the entries as the standard is so high, however, this is a competition and we have to pick some winners !!
Our winner of the 2018 Best Marmalade in Town is Ruman Gamba. The judges felt that the winning entry eptomised what they felt a marmade should be, with a perfect set, lovely clear appearance and a very clean taste of seville orange.
We really struggled to single out a clear 2nd place, so opted for joint 2nd entries from Patricia Tricker and Sue Jarrold, with 3rd (4th) place going to Gillian Whittle. Well done to everyone.
We’re of course extremely grateful to our judges for putting their taste buds on the line but we couldn’t hold a competition without entries so a huge thank you to everyone who entered – you’re all wonderful marmalde makers.
Next up our Jam competition in the Summer……so get planning !!
